Re: 2010

Can't possibly be any worse than Mortal Online's current efforts.

I mean yeah, MO has tremendous potential, but the dev team is really dropping the ball as far as beta and PR goes.

Re: 2010

It might even be amusing to see every one of these companies fall for the same pitfalls and traps over and over, except that each one just makes it less likely that this genre will survive in any form I care about. Why does nobody learn from the mistakes of others? Why does nobody study the history of this genre? It's only like 15 years long, shouldn't really be that hard.

I guess the hard part is gleaning the correct lessons from that history. Common sense is decidedly uncommon.

Re: 2010

I would tend to believe that people in the biz believe that they know whats best. And they believe what we see isn't real. We are the sheeple buying whatever they put out after all. And to give them a fair shake, there are an abundance of people on the internet spouting off about what they want, without really knowing what they want.

Of course, you also have to look at it all from a strictly business stand point too. They want to make the game that makes money. And a good game is a niche market. A broad appeal is what they want, but a broad appeal is mediocrity.

Just take a look at the game "Demon's Souls." This game was fantastic! But it didn't have that broad appeal. So it won't ever make as much as say Madden, but there would be little debate between real gamers which was the better game.

Oh there is just so much wrong about the industry these days, but I have hopes for the future. With the release of Demon's Souls and Dragon Age: Origins. Good games that hearken back to the best games of my youth. Hopefully we are at a time of getting back to the roots of gaming. Taking concepts of the past that we know are fun and using current technology to enhance the experience while keeping the spirit of the games alive.

Re: 2010

I know exactly what I want:

Quote:
Turn on computer:
"Game Loading, Please Wait"
Character Entering World
OMG!!!! OMG!!!!!
"You Have Died: Loading, Please Wait"
WOW! That was cool! What happened? Why'd I di....
"You Have Died: Loading, Please Wait"
ok.....So I need to learn this character, huh?
You Say: Can someone help me a moment, please"
Orick Tells You: M'lady, may I assist?
You Tell Orick: Could you spare a moment and kill whatever that was that seems to not want me here?
Orick Tells You: Of course, m'lady. Allow me to give you a small shield of protection until you reach your trainer!
Orick Detalong: 50 Priest High Elf
You Tell Orick: Thank you so much! When did you enter this world?
Orick Tells You: Three years ago, m'lady, altho to you, this world is but a day! It will take you some time to become acquainted, but well worth it! Have you ever seen a world so lovely? Learn your lessons well! Knowledge will be rewarded and skill will prevail. Call on me if I might assist again!
*POOF*
/em ponders the current events
Willowind says: That was a Master, m'lady! They are here to guide us when we are in trouble. This spot is known to have difficulty and until it is corrected, the Masters watch over us. Be well. Fair journey!
/em curtsies
Sooo, yeah! I don't want to be babied and tutorial'd to death! I want to HAVE to learn my character and be able to assist others to learn, as well. I want a fantabulous world (like Vanguard had) that holds many secrets and gives you the desire to explore and unlock the abilities of your character. I want COMMUNITY again where greed and phat l00t isn't king. I want REAL GMs that are part of the world. I want NAME RESTRICTIONS!! I want devs to actually FIX bugs and no, "The game is working as intended" garbage from GMs that don't want to be bothered and can't speak english.

I flat want my breath knocked outta me every time I enter!!

Other than that.....EH!

disclaimer: this was the condensed version of the "I want" list! Feel free to add
